Your garbage disposal picks the worst moments to stop working — usually right after a big dinner when the sink is full of scraps and dirty dishes. Before you call a plumber or start shopping for a replacement, there’s a good chance you can figure out what’s wrong in just a few minutes. Most disposal problems fall into a handful of common categories, and some of them you can fix yourself right now.

Here’s a quick, practical guide to diagnosing your garbage disposal without any special tools or plumbing experience.

Step 1: Check the Obvious Stuff First

It sounds simple, but the first thing to do is make sure your disposal is actually getting power. This catches more problems than you’d expect.

  • Is it plugged in? Most disposals plug into an outlet under the sink. Check that the cord is fully seated in the outlet.
  • Check the wall switch. Some disposals are wired to a wall switch that can get accidentally bumped off.
  • Look at your circuit breaker. Go to your electrical panel and check if the breaker for the kitchen has tripped. Reset it if needed.

If none of that reveals the issue, move on to the next step.

Step 2: Press the Reset Button

Completely Silent

No sound at all usually means a power issue. Go back to Step 1 and double-check the outlet, breaker, and reset button.

Loud Grinding or Rattling

If the disposal runs but sounds like it’s chewing on gravel, something hard is caught inside — a piece of glass, a small bone, silverware, or even a pit from a fruit. Turn it off and use tongs or pliers to fish around inside carefully. Never put your hand inside a disposal, even when it’s off.

Step 4: Check for Clogs and Drainage Problems

Sometimes the disposal itself works fine, but water backs up into the sink anyway. This means the clog is in the drain line, not the disposal.
